The youngest of 28 children, Grady Champion was raised in Canton, MS, and, unbelieveably, got his musical start as a rapper. He later turned to traditional blues, and broke on to the national scene with his self-released “Goin’ Back Home,” in 1998. He then had two critically-acclaimed releases on the Shanachie label, but returned home to study music at Hinds Community College in Raymond, MS and take a break from touring.
His revived career has been on the upswing, however, since his victory on January 23, 2010 in Memphis in the IBC Band competition. That has spurred his latest release, “Back In Mississippi Live At The 930 Blues Cafe” on Earwig Records. This club is located in Jackson, MS, and, on July 7, 2007, Grady took full advantage of the sold-out “home court” crowd to deliver a high-octane set of fourteen originals and well-known covers that showcase Grady’s powerhouse vocals, harp chops, and songwriting capabilities. Joining Grady on guitar on this set is long-time associate Eddie Cotton, Jr., and they waste no time in getting the crowd involved with the leadoff boasts of “I’m Ready,” then breaking into a dynamite medley of “Baby What You Want Me To Do” and “Bright Lights, Big City.”
As a vocalist, Grady brings to mind a Bobby Rush or Johnnie Taylor type. He’s a man that’s right at home with a swingin’ blues cut like “Why I Sing The Blues,” then he can croon a slow one that’ll make all the ladies swoon, with “Love And Memories” and “I’m Yours.” His writing prowess also includes interesting socially-conscious themes such as “Brother, Brother,” and “Policeman Blues,” which features a rap break from Jacktown Swiff at the bridge.
We had two favorites, too. Grady’s harp work adds the perfect complement to “Spoonful,” and Cotton’s scratchy guitar lines and Calvin Wilson’s funky B-3 make “-800-Blu-Love” a real crowd pleaser!
It’s good to see Grady Champion back in the national spotlight. Given his recent triumphs and with the release of “Back In MS Live,” here’s hoping that we’ll hear a lot more from this exciting showman in the future!! Until next time….Sheryl and Don Crow.
