Sam Carr
Sam Carr was born April 17, 1926 in Marianna, Arkansas. His father – Robert “Nighthawk” McCollum – was always on the road playing music. Sam was adopted by the Carr family, who raised him until he was eighteen. Sam first joined his father in 1946 as a driver and collector of money. Robert had other drummers at that time, including Kansas City Red, later a well-known Chicago bandleader.
When Sam moved with his wife, Doris, to St. Louis, he started his own 5-piece band, first playing guitar and later bass and drums. In 1956, he met Frank Frost and asked him to join the band on guitar, harmonica and vocals. Shortly thereafter, they joined with Sonny Boy Williamson. Robert Nighthawk also played with them when he came to St. Louis, and from 1963 to 1967 in Mississippi and Arkansas.
Sam Carr’s determination is the reason that he, Frank Frost, and Jack Johnson stayed together over the years. Sam managed the band, bought and kept up all the instruments, and made sure everyone showed up for the gigs. Sam is a fine, hard driving drummer and bandleader, who deserves much of the credit for this record becoming a reality. Like Frank he is a man of many moods, professional in every way as a musician, and generous of his time and knowledge.
